The big guns failed to blaze or didn’t have enough fire power to quell the challenge thrown by Sri Lanka at India in the fifth and final ODI at R Premdasa stadium in Colombo on Sunday. In the process, India lost the newly acquired Number 2 position to Australia who beat New Zealand by 32 runs at the SCG in Sydney the same day.

Both India and New Zealand were set a 300 plus target and while the latter fought back through a valiant 115 by Grant Elliot but fell short by 32 runs, India lost wickets early in the innings chasing 322 to end up 68 behind Lanka. However, India won the series 4-1 and Australia is trailing New Zealand 2-1.
Sri Lanka was propelled to 320 by a 143-runs second wicket partnership between Dilshan and Sangakara who made 97 and 84 respectively. Thereafter a brief collapse threatened Lanka innings but Mahroof (32) and Thusara (11) and Kulasekhra (10) steadied the boat for Lanka. Except for  Dhoni and Gambhir , the entire Indian team bowled to restrict Lanka but in vain and  in reply only three batsmen Yuvraj (73), debutant R Jadeja (60 not out) and skipper Dhoni scored half centuries while others failed to make match of it. Pak’s smart move: Probe ‘finds’ Bangladeshi link to 26/11

Posted on 05 February 2009 by ashok

In a move to shift international attention away from Pakistan, the  country’s probe into the Mumbai attacks is likely to indicate that the incident was the handiwork of a network of Muslim fundamentalist groups in South Asia as investigators have found evidence of a Bangladeshi connection, according to a media report.

The report on Pakistan’s investigation is likely to indicate that the attacks were carried out by “an international network of Muslim fundamentalists present in South Asia and spread all the way to Middle East” while making a case for regional anti-terror cooperation, the influential Dawn newspaper on Thursday quoted its sources as saying. Clarke opts out of IPL

Posted on 05 February 2009 by ashok

Australian vice-captain Michael Clarke says he will not play in this year’s Indian Premier League. Clarke said his decision to skip the lucrative Twenty20 tournament was made because Australia has such a busy international schedule coming up.

“I won’t be going to the IPL,” Clarke said, ruling himself out of tomorrow’s auction. The most important thing for me is we’ve only got a couple of weeks off, we’ve got a very busy schedule. With me, with my body and time with my family, I want time off this year.”

Yuvraj outplays Sri Lanka; India clinch series

Yuvraj's strokeful 117 helped India beat Lanka by 147 runs

Yuvraj's strokeful 117 helped India beat Lanka by 147 runs

Sri Lanka emulated India to go for batting powerplay early in the innings but that backfired for the hosts. Actually, it wasn’t a bad decision considering Sri Lanka were to chase a huge victory target but Jayeardene and his boys could not match the speed and accuracy of Yuvraj and Sehwag, who incidentally, wasn’t the dominant a partner this time. The host were way short by 147 runs chasing a target of 364.

It was class when Yuvraj waited for the ball to cut late between the keeper and short third man. It was an exhibition of his power when he picked up Sanath Jayasuriya for a huge six over long-on. It was perfect timing when he punched the ball through cover. It was wristy elegance as he caressed the ball from on or just outside off-stump to the midwicket fence. Continue Reading

India halt Lanka run chase to go 2-0 up

Posted on 02 February 2009 by ashok

Thilina Kandamby almost masterminded a great escape for Sri Lanka, but just fell short in the face of Ishant Sharma, who kept his nerve and struck three crucial blows in the last 10 overs of a thrilling chase.

India’s 256 was at least 30 short of what they would have expected after a fiery start, but half-way through Sri Lanka’s innings it seemed they had shot over by at least 30. Kandamby had other ideas, though, stringing together a 100-run partnership with Mahela Jayawardene from 36 for 3, and smaller crucial ones with the lower order to take the match into the last over. Coming into the match Kandamby had scored 171 runs in eight matches, with one prior half-century, and ended unbeaten on 93 on Saturday. Continue Reading
