Lalu blows hot and cold against Cong in Bihar

Posted on 22 March 2009 by ashok

In a new turn in their tussle, RJD chief Lalu Prasad on Sunday declared his party’s intention to field its candidates against the Congress in three seats held by it in Bihar and accused it of trying to “finish” regional parties.

Blowing hot and cold against Congress, Lalu likened Congress’ aim of contesting 37 seats in Bihar to build their organisation as “digging a well when one’s house is on fire”.

Arguing that Congress alone is not UPA, he told reporters “if the name UPA name remains it is good, otherwise some other name can be adopted and some other front will be formed.”

In reply to questions, he said there is no plan to ally with the third front. “We are part and parcel of UPA…Its my responsibility to keep the UPA intact and I am ready to make any sacrifice for it.”

Lalu also said the UPA will come back to power and that Manmohan is “suitable” for being the Prime Minister again. Continue Reading

Balle Balle!! Harbhajan celebrates another wkt in NZ second innings

India broke a 33-year drought when a six-wicket haul by Harbhajan Singh spun them to a 10-wicket victory over New Zealand in the first Test here Saturday. Harbhajan’s 6-63 wizardry, following an iconic 160 by Sachin Tendulkar, formed the cornerstone of India’s first Test success in New Zealand since 1976.

They wrapped the game up with more than a day to spare after New Zealand were all out in their second innings for 279, and India knocked off the required 39 runs in 5.2 overs. Brendon McCullum kept the Test alive longer than expected with a fighting 84 at the New Zealand tail, but it had been a lopsided match from day one when the hosts’ top order crashed to 60-6 on a benign wicket. Posted on 04 March 2009 by ashok

NAPIER: Shrugging off the T20 defeats, India on Tuesday bounced back with a solid batting display to spank New Zealand by 53 runs on the basis of Duckworth-Lewis method in the rain-marred first One-dayer and take 1-0 lead in the five-match series. India rode on skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s unbeaten 84 and blistering half-centuries by Virender Sehwag (77) and Suresh Raina (66) to rattle up 273 for 4 in 38 overs and then put up a disciplined bowling performance to prevent the Kiwis from upstaging them.

Rain-interruptions added to the woes of New Zealand, who were forced to chase a stiff target of 216 from 28 overs when the drizzle halted play for the second time in the match. The Kiwis could manage just 162 for nine. They were 111 for four in 20.5 overs while chasing original 278-run target from 38 overs when play was suspended and on the resumption the Kiwis were left with a daunting task of scoring 105 runs off 7.1 overs.
