West Indies thump Australia by 7 wickets

West Indies openers Chris Gayle and Andre Fletcher put on 133 in 69 balls on Saturday to steer their team to a seven-wicket win over Australia in the Twenty20 World Cup. Gayle smashed six sixes and six boundaries for 88 off 50 balls and Fletcher hit 53 off 32 deliveries, including seven boundaries, as West Indies reached 172-3 to eclipse Australia’s total of 169-7 with 25 balls to spare at The Oval report agencies

The pair’s stand was the third highest international Twenty20 partnership. Fast bowler Brett Lee received most of the punishment, with figures of 0-51 from three overs at one stage. Gayle collected 27 runs off Lee’s third over after hitting three massive sixes, one of which went out of the ground and into an adjoining school and another that landed on the roof of a stand bordering long on. Meeting called by NSW Premier Nathan Rees with the Idian Ccommunity leaders

Even as New South W ales Premier Nathan Rees was telling media persons yesterday about some practical steps having been agreed upon at a meeting between Ministers, agencies and Australian Indian leaders to address any safety concerns held by overseas students, a correspondent flashed a flyer being reportedly distributed in a university asking “overseas students to go back” and “Aussie Unis for Aussies.” Mr. Rees promptly assured the media that the “we will investigate and bring offenders to book.

The Premier, who along with NSW Police Commissioner Andrew Scipione, President of the United Indian Association Mrs. Aruna Chandrala broke from the meeting to addressed the media, urged members of the Indian Community to report all incidents of violence because it helps the Government and Police to identify patterns of behaviour and target resources where they are needed. India-Pak clash in T20 warm up match

The Asian giants India and Pakistan face each other in a warm up match ahead of the T20 World Cup at the Oval on Wednesday, their first after the Mumbai attacks aftre which the latter was stripped of World Cup hosting rights.

The England and Wales Cricket Board have  taken ‘extra’ measures for the security for the game and the London Metropolitan Police may have been asked to ‘be on the ball’, but for the people with backgrounds from both the nations, the game is just another match. Continue Reading
